Khorasan is a vast Iranian province in northwestern Iran. Mashad, its capital, has become a huge city that all year long attracts pilgrims from all over the world who come to visit the shrine of Imam Reza. It is also an important carpet center where most of the production of the province is centralized; Sabzevar, Mood Birdjend, Semnan, and Kashmar.
Weavers in Khorassan produce different types of carpets, as population is composed by Baluchi, Kurds and Turkoman. The latter (mostly Yomud) wove large sized, long and rather narrow pieces. The small, regular pattern obtained with the sumakh technique, reflects their common roots with other Turkmen tribes.
