Tibetan weavers  have very seldom produced large size carpets; it is only onwards the mid-20th century, when the Tibetans fled to north India and Nepal that they systematically started working on larger looms on request of western wholesalers.

The traditional old pieces were either very small square rugs used for meditation and saddle rugs or sizes of approximately 80x180 cm. They were displayed in the evening and used as a mattress but also could be wall decoration. Some larger sizes were the pillar carpets. Many of those show a dragon winding around the pillar. The largest looms in the older tomes were hardly wider than 160 cm.
