Hamadan (once Ectabane, capital of the Medes) is usually used as a collective name for the carpets of the area.

Production was-and is-very active in hundreds of villages.

Only in thethe 20th century  an attempt wasmade, to the extent possible, to attribute an exact origin to village carpets.

Carpets knotted in the city of Hamadan were given the suffix 'Shahrbaft' (Farsi, meaning 'knotted in the city').

This specimen, dated 1848, is difficult tolocate in any of the numerous villages from around Hamadan.

Everything suggests that the weavers had little experience.

Was the centre motif applied earlier than the old-pink background ?

Anyway, the undulations of the weft threads at the level of the central design deviate unexpectedly up or down instead of following the usual horizontal line.

The text is no longer decipherable, but presumably it is the name of the knotter.
