Hamadan is a town in NW Iran. It is the old city Ecbatane that was once the capital of the Medes. The name is commonly used for the rug production in hundreds of the hamlets and village within a quite vast area.

It is only in the second half of the 20th century that specialists started to more correctly name each rug according to its’ origin. Carpets made in the city were called (Hamadan) Shahrbaft which means knotted downtown.
