The name Karabagh (“Black Garden”) is related to a group of Caucasian rugs which have black or dark brown fields decorated with flowers and roses.

Following the 19th century colonial expansion into the region, there was a strong European influence.

But the Armenian population of Karabagh villages made a lot of different patterns: portraits of people or animals (peacocks, lions, horses, dogs, deer, etc) or even postcards with views from around the world which, despite a coarse knot, where skilfully rendered.
